Carnage at 42M

Wednesday 22nd October

WOW, what a day, Birds, Dolphins, Whales & hungry Snapper, just magic.

Got the call from Greg to have another crack out wide at the work ups, so hatched a plan to leave Kawakawa Bay around mid morning.

So we set off in his boat Reel Time (6.5m Ramco) at 11 & headed for Ponui Island, stopped & had a couple of casts & picked up a small KY & JD’s so with not a lot happing the call was made to head out wide & see if we could find some wildlife & find it we did.

Not much around till we hit the 40m mark then the Birds started showing up then the Dolphins & then the Whales, just an awesome site watching them come out of the water sideways with their mouths open gulping down Baitfish.

So Softbaits & Jigs deployed to the bottom & fish on, Snapper after Snapper, it was all guns blazing with multiple hook ups on just about every drop, Snapper fishing at its finest.

Didn’t take long to fill the bin up with some nice fat Snaps from the mid 40’s to the mid 50’s, no big fish but bloody good fun on light tackle & exceptional eating size.

I began the day with a 2oz Cyclops with a 4″ Bruised Banana Jerk Shad & it just got smashed, Greg was using a Blue Jitterbug & his got monstered as well, it was all on.

I changed to an Orange 100gram Jitterbug then a Blue 60gram Jitterbug & as soon as they hit the bottom it was bent rods & happy times, for the next couple of hours it was just insane fishing, it didn’t matter what you dropped down to the bottom it just got engulfed by angry hungry Snapper.

Good times with lots of banter & laughs, memories being made.

Saw the Whale Watcher boat out & about doing his thing, they would of had a great show.

Around 4 it started to slow with just little fish hitting our offerings so with a bin full we decided to make our way back in.

We found a few more patches of Birds & Dolphins in tow but nothing underneath them so it was home James.

Back at the ramp just after 5.

So a top day out in the Gulf with great weather, great company & a very healthy bin of fat Snaps, some destined for the table & some for the smoker.

A huge big thank you to Greg for taking Me out & putting us onto the fish, just a magical day I won’t forget in a hurry.

So pick your weather & get out there & get em folks

Happy Days………
