Fished out the back of Ponui Island today for a very nice bin of fat heathy Snapper, man are they in good nick, hard fighting fish, bloody good fun on light gear, I use 6lb main with 10lb leader, maybe a bit light for in around the rocks but I find it gives the softies a better action in shallow water.
Got on the water for the last hour of the outgoing & cruised out on glassy seas with a very light South East breeze, sunny skies, all one needs for a great day on the briny.
Water temp still around 16 to 17deg & very clear.
Didn’t sea much bird life although the sounds of the Gannets being pumped out from Rotoroa Island was interesting to say the least.
Drifted around the back side of Ponui into the Ruth Passage in 4 to 11m & found the fish hard on the weed line.
Used 1/2oz Zman Jigheads with Zman 4inch NewPenny Paddle Tails to do the damage, the Snapper just love these things & smashed em hard, lost a few nice fish in the weeds but thems the breaks, ya win some ya lose some, but thats fishing.
A few nice Kingfish in the area to with them coming up underneath the Snapper, saw a couple that would of been in the 15 -20kg mark but not interested in My offerings, would say if I had had a livey it would of been game on but there is always a next time.
So get out there & get em.
