Spring Workups at 42 meters

With a SE wind and reports from Friday saying that the mad bite had slowed down since Wed/Thursday, we ventured out (our expectations were not that high). The crew was PDSquid, Rich, Steve and myself. We left Te Atatu boat ramp at 10am with the sun shining and seas flattening. Reached the 42 metre mark around the elbow (corner of Telecom Cable zone). There were small spread out workups as far as the eye could see. We stopped on some likely sign and Rich was the first one down with a pink 100gr jitterbug, which did not even get to the bottom, before it was smashed and the little 4000 overhead reel started screaming.

We all dropped down different jigs and softbaits and soon started catching fat angry snaps. The best fish of the day were caught by Zman bruised bananas. It was not easy fishing and as the bite dropped off we found that the softbaits out fished the slow jigs.

The couta gang was also in force today and we all lost some terminal gear to them. Other species caught in the workups were gurnard and KY, so we caught a fair few different species today!

Get out there and enjoy the spring workups while they last.

Cheers
