The Autumn fishing starts

Every year is different and we have found the fishing to be a bit late this year with February fishing like January and now in March it is finally becoming more consistent with the colder weather bringing the workups on.

The weather has been brilliant over the past month meaning we can go wide and enjoy a vast area to fish.

Every year is different and I think that is the magic of fishing in that you do not know what to expect!

We have been hunting the numerous kingfish in the Hauraki Gulf at the moment and there are some good size ones available to the resourceful angler. While jigs are working some days we are finding the live baits are more consistent for the larger specimens.

We have also been finally finding some bigger snapper as well after a couple of months of pannies being the staple catch. We are finding these fish out wide over the sand along the outside of the cable zone and over towards the middle ground 4-5nm west of channel Island. My clients are catching these fish on 140gr Slider and Inchiku/Jitterbug style slow jigs.

The new Bruised Banana 140gr Slider from Ocean Angler has also been working really well while the pinks and green/reds have slowed down for us? We have also been coming home with Jon Dory which is a nice by-catch (at Channel Is, the Coro barges and a lump we found just nort of Flat rock). The Lime Pickle seems to attract these fantastic table fish

Once this bad spell of weather is over we can’t wait to get out there again as we have found some intense mammal and bird workup action over the last week.

See ya out there.

Cheers Capt. Snap (Nik)
